The Truth Why so Many People Fail With Self-help Programs
There are thousands of self-help or life improvement programs for sale everyday world wide, so why is it that of those that are sold, 99% of the purchasers will not achieve their hopes and dreams.
There is an ever growing belief that these self-help programs are not the instant fix to riches and happines. That some how just by reading these manuscripts can change our whole outlook on life and eliminate the excuses we all make for not making the changes we need to make.
This article will investigate probably the most plausible cause why so many people fail with these programs.
First and foremost you must understand you are in charge of your life, you always have been and always will be.
This is quite a daunting thought for most people,in fact over 90% of people play the blame game,its easier to blame people, places and things than take full responsibility for our actions.
You can see this in so many lives, how many times have we heard, “it wasn’t me guv it was him”.
Or we find it’s easier to blame the boss or work colleagues when we are not progressing in the work place. How often have we blamed our partners for holding us back? How often is it the government or authorities fault, we can always say we are too young or too old. It seems there is no end to the excuses we can find.
The best excuse for not achieving must be “It’s not my fault I can’t get anywhere, I am like I am because of the conditioning of my childhood, and it was my fathers/mothers fault”.
Yes, you may have been conditioned to accept a certain lifestyle and to accept a certain standard of living but this doesn’t mean you cannot change it.
When you can honestly stand and raise your hand up, take full responsibility for your actions, and accept everything in your past, your success and your failures, and know these are down to you, then and only then it is at that time you can say you are half way to becoming as successful as you want to be.
If you know deep down there is more to life, and you are prepared to be one of the small minority that take full control and responsibility for their actions good or bad, then these self-help programs will help you get into action so you can achieve wealth, health and happiness.
If you can just stop for one minute and look at the most important word in the last sentence, no not wealth nor is it health or happiness the most important word in the last sentence is actually the corner stone of any self-help program and the key to your new life and success the word is ACTION.
It is so important I will say it again ACTION… and that is the bottom line. Self-help programs cannot work if we don’t take ACTION, and if you want to know the real truth here it is.
The truth is this, only about 3% of people (maybe less), that read through a self-help or life improvement program will take the action to actually change their thinking and so give them the success they desire.
10% will read through the program make a plan but fail to continue to apply it to their everyday living. The rest may not even finish reading the book.

I recall seeing a study somewhere that suggested self help books don’t really help. I believe it looked at financial self help books. If I remember correctly, three or ten years after reading various “get rich quick” and other money-related books, the readers were generally making more money, but so was everyone else (on average) that didn’t read the books. The conclusion was that the books didn’t help.
Now that is jumping to conclusions! Consider the assumption implicit in it. Researchers assumed those who didn’t read books did nothing special. This seems unlikely, to say the least. From what we see of people, we might wonder if most really want to work on general self development, but we also can see that almost everyone regularly tries to better their financial situation.
In other words, people in the control group were doing things other than reading self help books, and those efforts got them further ahead also. Think about this for a moment. How does this show that the books didn’t help? It’s like “proving” that a car can’t get you across the city because walking and biking and taking a bus can also get you there. They are just different ways to the same goal!
In other words, the books may have helped (on average), just like the other things people tried. Perhaps people choose the things that work best for them. Based on this hypothesis, a better test might be to have one group choose their self help methods while another is forced to use methods chosen by the researchers. If the first group shows more improvement, it suggests that many methods work, and that each person intuitively knows which will be more helpful.
It might show the opposite too. It is difficult to design such research. It is also difficult to have a proper “control,” and to start with the best hypothesis. One lesson from this is to be skeptical of research where things are hard to define and measure.Self Help Books Clearly Can Help
There are those of us who don’t need research to prove that a good book can help. We clearly recall a book that changed the course of our lives, or that obviously helped us in our relationships, or even boosted our income. Yes, of course self help books can help us.
Now, there is the question of why they don’t always help. You may have a friend who has told you all about a great new self help book or theory, yet doesn’t seem to be much affected by it in the end. You may have read some books yourself that got you excited, but didn’t seem to “stick” in our mind or change your subsequent behavior or life.
One reason for this apparent ineffectiveness may be that you need to read each book more than once, and that self help books in general help most if they are read regularly. (It is also possible that the effects of such books can be powerful, yet too subtle to notice right away.)
This reminds me of some research on eating I read about once. Researchers had people eat a meal. They then concluded that eating didn’t increase the odds of survival, since everyone died of starvation two months later. Okay, I made that up, but do you see the point? Just like you have to eat regularly to get the maximum survival benefit, perhaps you need to get those self help books out again and feed your mind from time to time to get the most out of them. Self-Help Ebooks – Inspiration And Motivation Mean Profits
Self-help is a huge subject area for writers. Pick any bestseller list, and you’ll find the self-help books feature heavily in the top ten nonfiction books in any week of the year. Everyone wants motivation and inspiration.
So what does this mean to you as an ebook writer? Basically it means that you should be looking at the self-help area carefully, especially when it comes to article writing and ebook development.
In this article, we’ll discuss finding topics for self-help ebooks which are easy for you to write, and to sell.
Ebooks aren’t as long as print books, so they’re fast to write. I’ve noticed that in the past year, shorter ebooks of 50 to 90 pages are selling well. Assuming that you get 250 words per page, a 50-page ebook is just 12,500 words. You should be able to get such an ebook written in a week.
The best topics for you are those in which you have some experience. When you’re experienced in an area, it means that you know the basics – you’re not starting from scratch. It’s also an area in which you have a strong interest, and projects for topics in which you’re interested are always much easier to write.
Make a list of self-help topics you’ve explored in the past, or are currently involved with. For example, if you’re trying to lose weight or get fit, those are prime self-help areas. So is anything to do with spirituality.
Let’s look at three ways you could find topics for a self-help ebook.
1. What self-help topics are you interested in?
Start with your own interests. For example, you may be interested in stress relief, time management, writing (yes, you can include writing in the self-help field), and financial management.
Make a list of any topics you’re interested in currently.
Also list any self-help topics you’ve been interested in in the past. You may have joined a gym at some stage, and been interested in fitness. Perhaps you’ve just had a baby, and read lots of “baby” books while you were happily pregnant. Perhaps you explored alternative medicine.
A tip: if you’re writing an ebook on any topic connected with health, have the ebook vetted by a health professional before you offer it for sale. It’s vital that you give good information.
2. Make a list of challenges you’ve overcome
Your own challenges are also a prime area in which you can find ebook topics.
Perhaps you’ve been broke, and have paid off all your debts – debt management is a great topic for an ebook. Or perhaps you’ve suffered a health challenge and have overcome it. If this is your story, share it with others.
3. What’s on Amazon’s bestseller list?
I love the Amazon bestseller list – it’s always crammed with self-help books, and they can give you excellent ideas for self-help ebooks.
For example, I’ve just checked over the list, and found books on life management, finding a purpose for your life, guilt-free eating, and attracting wealth.
Any of those topics have many sub-topics which you could explore in an ebook.
